We’ve all heard horror stories about labels interfering with a band’s creative vision, but it’s rarely been documented as snappily as this. I Fight Dragons frontman Brian Mazzaferri recounts, with the assistance of SNES score counters, the laborious process of endlessly rewriting a song that their label, Atlantic, was sure would be a hit. They wrote over eighteen versions before giving up – even getting Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo wasn’t enough to win Atlantic over. Unsurprisingly, the relationship between band and label has now ended…

The Latest From HMV...
HMV's administration has kicked into gear, with a number of stories spilling off onto the kerb as the juggernaut continues its unsteady descent. On Monday reports indicated that major labels, who are likely to really suffer if HMV goes under, were offering cheap credit terms and wholesale prices to potential bidders, while on Tuesday we heard that Hilco had thrown a separate lifeline by buying the company's debt. On Wednesday Rough Trade looked poised to take advantage of the situation by suggesting they could open more shops around the country, although Geoff Travis was careful to note "there was no celebration” from them concerning HMV's plight. On Thursday G-A-Y founder Jeremy Joseph announced he'd bought back the shares in his brand that were owned by HMV, making him the complete owner again, and today WH Smith confirmed they would not be looking to exploit any gaps in the music retail market. CEO Kate Swann insisted there was no money in entertainment retail: "HMV were the last man standing … pretty much everybody went because nobody could make any money out of it". Sadly, she's spot on.
