Classical music has been the slowest genre to adjust to the “digital revolution”, with listeners stubbornly continuing to hoover up CDs and records instead of plugging themselves into iTunes. Ludovico Einaudi seems to have broken through the barrier however, with his ‘In A Time Lapse’ becoming the first classical release to sell more digital than physical copies (by some distance actually, with a 72/28 split). “Einaudi’s impressive achievement is also a perfect illustration of the coming of age of digital classical music,” reckons Martin Talbot, the Official Charts Company’s MD, although there’s a good chance that it’s Einaudi’s crossover appeal that has led to him writing 13 of the tracks in the current Classical Top 20. Still, it’s an excuse to listen to the gorgeous track above, so bravo Ludovico!
