Gideon ‘George’ Osbourne had the unenviable task of delivering the budget today, in an anti-coalition atmosphere which makes positive spinning even more difficult than usual – indeed, he’d barely finished before Ed Millibean was cheerfully branding him a ‘Downgraded Chancellor’ (a reference to the UK losing its AAA credit rating).
