We never really got on board with rainbow-haired pop act Kyla La Grange‘s debut album, but hot damn the video to new single ‘Cut Your Teeth’ has got us excited about the follow-up. It’s produced by recent Digital Soundboy signing Jakwob (whose own forthcoming album is sounding pretty tasty too), who was drafted in to oversee this and did such a good job he ended up behind the desk for the whole flipping album.
Listening to the track, you can see why. The snappy, minimal beat is just perfect, leaving lots of room for La Grange’s soft, silky vocals and some throbbing synths on the chorus. It seems like a match made in heaven, and La Grange would appear to agree juding by a recent interview in i-D: “It sounds really wanky, but it was the most free in terms of creative expression that I’ve ever felt in a studio. I felt like we could just do anything we wanted to. The album never seemed to fit in a particular genre, so we weren’t concerned about making it fit – we were very much just making it sound how we wanted it to sound”.
It’s certainly got our appetite whetted, as has the knowledge that one break-up song, aptly named ‘Cannibal’, is about eating an ex-lover (OK, she might have been joking about that part). The video, meanwhile, features liberal use of UV paint, giving an otherworldly feel that’s enhanced by hanging barbie dolls, a dead piranha, skeletal dancers and a big bloody parrot flapping about. And if the rest of the album manages to occupy this unexpected middle-ground between the pop sensibilities of FEMME and the starker sound of FKA Twigs, two of the other brightest lights on the London scene, we’ll be more than satisfied…
