The nape is a funny part of the body really. Unless you suffer chronic neck pain you rarely think about it, and if you have long hair, no one ever sees it. Yet despite this perhaps unfair lack of recognition, the nape carries on, steadfastly keeping your head from lolling to one side like a deflated balloon.

The new video by The Left Rib (not another neglected body part but the atmospheric duo consisting of Belle Benham and Bonobo keys-man Johnny Tomlinson) redresses the balance by celebrating not just the titular nape but the rest of the body too. Focusing on the manipulated flesh of Benham herself, it’s a highly charged and sharply edited piece that suits the increasing intensity of the track, which is taken from last year’s Corporeal EP on Blind Colour.

“The initial idea came from an installation I did of a film I made”, Benham explains, “that I then projected into water. It was Ophelia-esque – a double layered film of me floating in water and the sea in Brighton. The genesis of this was a set of photos I took of my own body – sections of it so it started to look like a landscape. I wanted to explore our corporeality as human beings.

“The idea behind the video was for it to be sensual, focusing on sections of the body and also to discuss desire. The multiple hands were meant to signify the consumption of our bodily desires and how we manage them.”
